John Mulaney has checked himself into rehab for cocaine and alcohol addiction after relapsing, Page Six has learned.
According to the outlet, who broke the news Monday (December 21), the Saturday Night Live comedian, 38, who has been struggling with his sobriety, signed up for a 60-day treatment at a Pennsylvania rehab facility for his issues with addiction.
“John’s friends and family are happy that he’s finally getting some help and focusing on his health,” a source told Page Six. “His fans know he’s struggled in the past with sobriety, he has talked about it openly. Unfortunately, he has struggled again during the pandemic. He’s on board with his recovery, he’s not fighting against rehab.”
The two-time Emmy winner has previously opened up about his challenges with his addictions in the past, most recently in a 2019 interview with Esquire. In the cover story, Mulaney admitted that he’d first began drinking at the age of 13 before taking prescription and illegal drugs.
“I drank for attention,” he explained. “I was really outgoing, and then at twelve, I wasn’t. I didn’t know how to act. And then I was drinking, and I was hilarious again.”
“I never liked smoking pot. Then I tried cocaine, and I loved it,” Mulaney admitted. “I wasn’t a good athlete, so maybe it was some young male thing of This is the physical feat I can do. Three Vicodin and a tequila and I’m still standing. Who’s the athlete now?”
Recalling the time his parents sent him to a psychiatrist as a teen, Mulaney said the doctor described him as being “one part nice kid, one part ‘gorilla that wants to kill the other half.’”
It wouldn’t be until blacking out — even on perfume — that Mulaney would become sober at age 23.
“I went on a bender that weekend that was just, like, fading in and out of a movie … It was just crazy … I was like, ‘You’re f—king out of control,’” he said. “And I thought to myself, ‘I don’t like this guy anymore. I’m not rooting for him.’”
As yet, reps for Mulaney have not responded to the report.
