Hundreds of people were stuck on roadways when winter storms hit the middle of the country and the South over the last two weeks. It’s time to learn a lesson and prepare for that possibility yourself. The National Weather Service has a handy guide on building a vehicle emergency winter kit.

Here are the items you need:

  • Cell phone and charger
  • First aid kit
  • Jumper cables
  • Snow chains
  • Flares
  • Water and snacks
  • Full tank of gas
  • Flashlight
  • Bag of sand or cat litter
  • Warm clothes includes coat, boots and mittens along with other spare warm clothing
  • Blanket
  • Tow rope
  • Shovel and or ice scraper
