Code-switching is when you change the way you speak, depending on the situation, and according to a new survey, 82% of American women do it at work. Basically, women change the way they talk to sound more professional. This is especially true for women in hospitality and food service, with 94% and 93% doing it, respectively. The main reasons? To appear professional, competent, and confident. But it can also feel pretty phony and emotionally draining for many. One-third of the women surveyed said using a “work voice” feels fake, and 25% say it’s emotionally draining.
