The Way You Sleep Could Be Making You Look Older

For some of us, falling asleep and staying asleep through the night is a huge accomplishment that takes planning, effort and the perfect environment. But while we’re tossing and turning in search of the most comfortable spot, it turns out, the way we sleep could actually be making us look older than we are.

According to experts, some positions can push and pull our skin while we’re lying in bed and that compression and friction can lead to wrinkles and premature skin sagging. "Sleep is essential for cellular repair and skin regeneration, but the way we sleep can significantly influence how our face and chest age," explains Dr. Svetlana Danovich, a triple board-certified cosmetic surgeon. "When we repeatedly sleep on our side or stomach, the skin is compressed against the pillow, creating mechanical stress.”

Over time, that causes creases in the skin, known as “sleep lines,” which can eventually become permanent wrinkles. Our cheeks, jaws and chest are the areas most likely to suffer the consequences and experts warn that side and stomach sleeping are the most damaging for our skin. “The repeated force weakens collagen and elastin, accelerating the loss of firmness and elasticity, especially in the delicate areas,” Danovich says.

So, what can we do to protect our skin while we snooze?

  • Start with sleeping on your back, if you can, as it’s the most skin-friendly position since it prevents direct contact with your face and pillow.
  • Elevate your head slightly, if possible, which will reduce puffiness.
  • Use a silk pillowcase as it can reduce friction and prevent creasing in the face. Research shows silk pillowcases help keep hair from frizzing in addition to preventing wrinkles.
  • Try an ergonomic pillow designed to keep you on your back.
