*LIST* States Where Speeding Tickets Cost The Most

Getting pulled over for speeding can ruin your day, but the financial consequences that follow can be even worse. Some drivers don’t know that speeding fines can vary dramatically depending on where you get pulled over, how fast you were going and court fees in the area. A new report gives us an idea of the potential cost of being caught driving too fast by revealing the most expensive states for speeding tickets.

  • The research looks at the minimum costs for speeding tickets in all 50 states. These are the lowest you’d pay for a ticket for going just 10 miles per hour over the speed limit.
  • The amounts include both the fine for speeding and the standard court fees in the state.
  • Across the U.S., the average cost of a ticket for going 10 mph over the speed limit is $130.
  • The least expensive tickets are from New Mexico and Nebraska, where it’s just $25.
  • That low level of speeding will cost you $50 or less in four other states: Montana ($40), North Dakota ($40), Washington ($43) and Washington, D.C. ($50).
  • But in a lot of states, you’ll pay a lot more. A ticket for going just 10 mph over the speed limit will cost over $200 in several states.
  • So, where will that speeding ticket cost the most? California is the most expensive at $234.
  • Of course, getting caught going faster will cost even more. The average cost of a speeding ticket nationwide for going 40 miles per hour over the limit is $362.
  • But two states have much bigger fines for going 40 mph above the speed limit. Illinois has the highest, that ticket can cost $25-hundred there, and in New York, it’s $15-hundred.
