While we’re still sweating out the dog days of summer, fall will be here soon and will hopefully bring sweater weather with it. Before the cozy season arrives, DoorDash has released their Fall Flavor Trends report, revealing the top seasonal flavor, which states love pumpkin spice lattes most, and just how early the first sip of fall happens.
It turns out, the pumpkin spice craze starts brewing earlier year after year. PSL demand spiked August 19th last year - almost two weeks ahead of 2021’s peak.
- The very first PSL order of the 2024 season came in at 9:45 a.m. on August 9th.
- But before coffee chains rolled out that fall beverage, DIY fall drink ingredients spiked in grocery orders in late July.
- Last year, DoorDash got 59-thousand orders for pumpkin spice lattes a week from August to October.
- But some states are more obsessed with PSLs than others. Looking at per-person orders of fall’s most famous drink, its biggest fans were in Alaska and Montana. They ordered the most PSLs, with Oregon, Washington, Colorado and California following close behind. Vermont and Mississippi ordered the fewest pumpkin spice lattes last year.
But if you’ve reached peak PSL and are ready for something new this fall, you’re in luck.
- According to DoorDash, pecan is the fastest-growing flavor for this autumn, with orders up 28% year-over-year.
- When it comes to the most-ordered cozy fall flavors in each state, apple is the number one, leading in 18 states, including Florida, the Carolinas and the Big Apple itself, New York.
- Caramel is second, with 13 states, including Illinois, Iowa and the Dakotas.
- Pumpkin dominates in nine states, including Washington and California.
- Cinnamon is the favorite in eight states, including Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire.
